Perfect start for Whincup
Jamie Whincup’s quest to go one better than his breakout 2007 season has started perfectly, with the Falcon 888 driver taking both races of the Clipsal 500.
Trouble never seemed far away on the street circuit, however Whincup steered clear of all the dramas by staying in or very close to the lead. His 888 teammate Craig Lowndes was eliminated from the second rate thanks to a crash with fellow Ford driver James Courtney.
The weekend shaped as a complete washout for Holden, when they filled just one of the first seven places in race 1. The scales tipped closer to even on Sunday, with Holden’s Lee Holdsworth and Cam McConville taking the minor placings. Holdsworth finished second for the weekend.
With the weekend marred by accidents, the most serious suffered by Ashley Cooper in the Fujitsu development series, it was fitting that the second race almost ended with the safety car crossing first. The yellow flag was lifted with two laps remaining, with Whincup’s Ford too powerful.
Defending series champion Garth Tander had a disastrous start to the season, finishing 23rd and 19th.
