Just when Australia was building a little momentum in its unlikely chase of 413 in the third test at the WACA, part-time off-spinner Virender Sehwag has taken two wickets to push India to the brink of victory.
Nearing tea on day four, Australia is 7/230, 183 away from achieving what would be the second greatest successful fun chase of all time. Michael Clarke (62 not out) is the only man standing in the way of the tourists.
Clarke and Adam Gilchrist looked comfortable against the recognised bowlers, knocking up a 50 run partnership in 10.5 overs. Skipper Anil Kumble’s bold gamble to introduce Sehwag paid immediate dividends, with Gilchrist bowled around his pads for 15.
Brett Lee then fell victim to a bat-pad catch for a duck.
Sehwag has 2/2 off two overs.
The Indian attack bowled superbly in the first session, again using the Perth swing to its full extent. The hard work was rewarded when Ishant Sharma dismissed Ricky Ponting for the second time in the match. The Australian skipper nudged a probing delivery on 45, leaving the home side 3/142 at lunch.
With Ponting gone, Mike Hussey became the most likely to steer Australia away from trouble. The left-hander played a fighting innings, until he was undone by an RP Singh inswinger, trapped LBW for 46.
Andrew Symonds arrived at the crease with typical bluster, slogging Kumble for a six. The wily veteran had his revenge later in the same over, fooling Symonds with a searing quicker ball. Symonds was caught plumb in front for 12, however replays indicated a clear inside edge.
Clarke is at the crease with Mitchell Johnson(0 not out).
