Channel Nine’s experiment to screen the Origin opener live into Melbourne was seen as a monumental risk. Sure, almost a million Melbournians viewed last seasons NRL grand final, but the Storm were playing. Nine has given Origin sporadic live coverage into the southern capital, but rarely a game I.
The figures below show the league held its own very nicely. The pre game finished third. Not unexpected. The match itself drew an average of over 350,000. Nothing to be sneezed at. Origin gave Ten a spanking, Seven edged it out, while it the ABC’s Spicks and Specks/The Chaser combo that took first prize. Even in Sydney and Brisbane, those shows performed admirably.
The story for league was the ‘post-game’ show, which technically started from 9:30. The actual game extended far beyond that, helping Nine win the timeslot. That’s right, a key timeslot in Melbourne was won by rugby league. This is all the vindication Nine needed, thus ensuring the rest of the series will be given the same treatment. And given the quality of the game last night, those numbers should only go up.
