The Queensland Reds looked like a team that isn’t used to winning, however the Reds did enough to beat out an unlucky Otago Highlanders 22-16 at Suncorp Stadium.
In a noticeably fast contest under the new experimental laws, Reds captain John Roe scored two of the Reds’ three tries. His first came in the fifteenth minute, off the back of a healthy period of possession. The hosts extended their gap when fullback Clinton Schifcofske was awarded a try in the 22nd minute.
Otago competed manfully from that point, arguably being the better team for the remainder of the match. The Highlanders completely dominated possession in the period after half time, however it was Roe again who snaffled a five-pointer in the 61st minute, this time after a huge push from the Reds. The video referee gave the home side the benefit of the doubt.
The second Reds try followed the yellow-carding of Otago prop Jamie MacKintosh, after he raised his elbow while in possession.
The Highlanders kept the contest alive when a bungled Reds lineout led to Adam Thomson scoring after 75 minutes.
The Reds were given a penalty with a minute remaining, with Schifcofske drilling the long-distance shot to see out the clock. The Highlanders still earned a point via losing by a margin of seven points or less.
