More pain for Newcastle

NRL round 22

> Ray Warren: Smith has to go, but where’s the board?
> Jimmy Smith: Menzies as good as ever

If tonight was supposed to be welcome relief for the Newcastle Knights after a week of turbulent headlines, it quickly became another night of ignominy, further fuelling speculation that the club is in crisis.

In front of a near sellout Gosford crowd, the Knights competed with Manly in the opening twenty minutes, only conceding one try. Brett Stewart’s try in the 24th minute ignited a devastating burst, which saw five tries in a twenty minute period and the game blown apart. At one point the Knights all time biggest defeat, 71-6 to Brisbane earlier this season, was in danger of being surpassed.

A 53 point margin would have been enough to see Manly overtake Melbourne on for and against, however the Sea Eagles took their foot off the pedal, eventually settling for their second 50 point effort of the season. Jamie Lyon scored two tries.
