Molik storms home

Alicia Molik has come from behind twice to overpower Estonia’s Kiri Kanepi 7-6, 7-5 in the first round of the Australian Open.

Molik started nervously in front of a healthy Rod Laver Arena home crowd, slumping to 0-3. Slowly the touch returned, with Molik repeating pulling out big serves at crucial moments.

Down 1-3 in the second set, Molik put together an astonishing 14 point run, showing glimpses of the form that led her to the world’s top ten. Kanepi regained composure, however nerves took their toll in the twelfth game, with a series of sprayed shots handing she would not relinquish. A sizzling forehand winner sealed the deal.

Next for Molik is 12th seed Nicole Vaidisova. The pair have never played against each other.
