Lyons World Cup over

Fiji 38 Wales 34
Scotland 18 Italy 16
New Zealand 85 Romania 8

Wallabies number 8 David Lyons is the latest world cup casualty, suffering a broken leg in Australia’s 37-6 win over Canada in Bordeaux.

Lyons’ plight didn’t seem so dire when he walked off the field, however x-rays showed a fractured fibula, with the regular recovery being three to four months.

“It would certainly be impossible for him to return to play during the World Cup,” said Wallabies team doctor Martin Raftery.

In their worst performance of the pool stage, the Wallabies led 18-6 against the lowly side with twenty minutes left. Two tries to Drew Mitchell and a late score to Chris Latham flattered the group winners.

Whether a replacement for Lyons will be called upon had yet to be decided.
