Lionel makes Messi of Socceroos

Martin Demichelis

World number two Argentina has outclassed the Socceroos, winning 1-nil in front of over 70,000 fans at the MCG.

Martin Demichelis scored the winner thanks to a header on 49 minutes. The star of the show though was the man who delivered the pass, Lionel Messi.

The 20 year old prodigy was unstoppable in a sublime performance, constantly terrorising the Australian defence with his supreme pace and left foot.

The goal was far too easy, with Messi swinging a free kick straight to Demichelis, who was unmarked in the box.

The Socceroos enjoyed good periods, with Mark Bresciano and David Carney almost scoring, however it was the visitors that made all the running and they thoroughly deserved their victory.

The match will more than likely signal the end of the Graham Arnold reign.

“Just didn’t have the luck on the night,” Arnold said.

“It was wonderful to sit on the bench and watch how good Argentina are, how they move the ball around.”

The match saw Socceroos veteran Josip Skoko play his final international, one of a host of older players end their careers under Arnold.

“I’ve had difficulties in the last 12-14 months, in retiring players and moving players on.

“I’m proud of the fact I brought a lot of new blood. The future is bright.”

Arnold will almost certainly stay with the Socceroos set up, in an assistant role.

“My coaching career I feel is going better and better.”
