The opening day of the much awaited test series between India and Pakistan has belonged to the home side, with Pakistan 8 for 210 at stumps on day 1 of the opening test in Delhi.

Winning the toss and batting, the visitors struggled from the outset. Left arm paceman Zaheer Khan started the rot, bowling the glacier-like Salman Butt for 1 off 20 balls, before having Younis Khan top-edging a bouncer to third man for 7. The Pakistanis went to lunch at 3/74, with opener Yasir Hameed bowled by captain Anil Kumble. The captain deceiving Hameed with a perfectly pitched wrong-un.

Then came the major blow, straight after the lunch break. Prized-batsman Mohammad Yousuf was trapped by medium pacer Saurav Ganguly for 27. Yousuf beaten by a low inswinger.

Pakistan would not recover before tea.

Kumble bowled Kamran Akmal and a wild Shoaib Akhtar, while captain Shoaib Malik was caught behind off Munaf Patel. Harbhajan also got in on the act, trapping Sohail Tanvir.

In a sign of the state of the pitch, six of the eight batsmen dismissed have either been bowled or LBW.

With the end of the innings seemingly imminent, Misbah-ul-Haq combined with Mohammed Sami to deny the Indians for the entire final session. The new ball was taken shortly before lunch, with several close calls. Misbah is unbeaten on 71, Sami is 20.

Captain Kumble has led from the front for the Indians, claiming 3/26 off 12 overs.
