Kruezer a Blue, Saints get Gehrig back
There were no surprises at the top end of the draft, while Fraser Gehrig’s meteoric return to football will be with the club he left at the end of the season, St.Kilda.
Matthew Kreuzer is now officially a Carlton Blue, while there was just as little surprise with the second pick, as Northern Knights star Trent Cotchin was snapped up by Richmond. West Coast, armed with pick three after giving up Chris Judd, went with a local boy. The highly regarded Chris Masten from East Fremantle will stay in the west.
The Saints had made it clear they would not use their top pick, selection nine, to draft Gehrig back. Fortunately for St.Kilda, or perhaps ominously, there was no interest in Gehrig from other clubs, leaving the Saints free to collect the full-forward with its third selection, pick 57.
Perhaps the most surprising pick was the resurrection of former Port Adelaide premiership player Stuart Dew (pick 45). The renowned goalkicker was snapped up by Hawthorn, despite Dew being retired since the end of the 2006 season and reportedly far from peak fitness.
Fremantle coach Mark Harvey has shown faith in two former Essendon players, with the Dockers giving Mark Johnson (pick 55) and Kepler Bradley (pick 69) a reprieve from the abyss.
