Australian rookie Jason Day has finished just two shots out of a playoff at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California, won by American Steve Lowery.

Day, who has been dubbed by many as the next big thing in golf, played a steady final round, firing four birdies and two bogeys for a 70, to finish the week at -8. The 20 year old was never really in the hunt for victory, with Vijay Singh looking strong at the turn. The Fijian was -13 before spluttering bogeys on 10, 14, 15 and 16. Singh birdied the last to force a playoff Lowery, who birdied the first extra hole to clinch the title.

Day finished sixth, his best result in eleven starts on the PGA tour. This season has seen steady improvement from the Queenslander. Day missed the cut in Hawaii, before finishing 49th and 20th before today’s top ten result.
