Infected Larkham gone until Semis

Stephen Larkham’s World Cup is turning into a horror show, with an infection from a recent arthroscopy ruling him out of the tournament until the semi finals.

Larkham noticed he was having trouble running a training session yesterday, with the result being a second bout of surgery.

Just how the Wallabies veteran became infected was speculated on by team doctor Martin Raftery.

“You have bugs on your skin and when you insert a foreign instrument into your body, you can take those bugs through to your knee joint,” said Raftery.

Wallabies coach John Connolly immediately ruled Larkham out until the semi finals.

“Hopefully he’ll be out tomorrow. He definitely won’t be considered for this weekend, or the weekend after,” Connolly said.

“He’s quite disappointed. He was coming along quite well.”

The Wallabies have what should be a comfortable match with Canada this weekend to conclude the pool stage, however with Larkham gone and Berrick Barnes struggling with a corked thigh, Connolly is running out of options for number 10.

The Wallabies coach acknowledged centre Matt Giteau could fill the role, but it’s believed Barnes may be risked.
