Hiddink to stay with Russia

Guus Hiddink

Any fragment of hope the Football Federation had of bringing back Guus Hiddink has been snuffed out, with the Russia coach agreeing in principle to extend his deal until the next World Cup.

“We have decided to continue our relationship for another two years through until 2010,” Hiddink said.

“Since day one I’ve enjoyed my job with Russia, enjoyed living in Moscow and enjoyed working with the Russian players.

“I think we have started an important job of building a new team and it’s very important to continue the process.

“I’ve made no secret of my desire to continue.”

There was a hint that Hiddink could leave his post if Russia do not qualify for the 2008 European championship. The Russians are currently sitting third in their group, however Hiddink confirmed he will stay, not matter what the result from qualifying.

“Of course we want to qualify, but even if we miss out I’m not planning to leave Russia,” Hiddink said.
