Hey Sonny Bill, what happened to all that loyalty?

Is this the same Sonny Bill that only a few weeks ago was near tears because his mate Willie Mason left the Bulldogs? The same Sonny Bill that opined about loyalty? Now he wants to pack it up and play for the All Blacks.

Excuse me, but doesn’t he have a signed long term contract?

Sonny Bill signed a five year deal with the Bulldogs. Could have made more elsewhere we were told, but he wanted to by his mum a house. The feelgood story of the year. Barely twelve months have passed and Williams suddenly has itchy feet. Hasn’t been offered a deal by New Zealand rugby, mind you, however a throwaway comment from Eddie Jones is apparently enough for Sonny to toss loyalty to the dustbin.

If we are going to have a discussion about loyalty and Sonny Bill, let’s not forget the role of the Bulldogs in all of this. In his four full seasons of first grade, Williams has missed 43 matches because of injury. Think about that. Nearly half of each season gone, yet the Dogs were happy to make a long term gamble. Happy to unload a cool $1.5 million, even if it meant seeing their star spend a fair portion of his time twiddling his thumbs on the sidelines.

“If the All Blacks came knocking on my door and offered me something pretty big, I definitely won’t be a fool,” Sonny Bill said last night on The Footy Show. Um, Sonny, if you get that knock on the door, you might not be a fool, but I’m guessing the Bulldogs bosses won’t be fools either.

The Bulldogs ripped him off!! Now paying him peanuts have come back to bite them in the arse!!

Loyalty is word clubs use to rip off young players and sign them up to 5 year contracts. If Sonny moves to Union he’ll be a global star and earn triple the amount of money he’d be retarted to stay with the doggies!

He has already stated publicly that when the time comes for him to make a decision on contracts he will be puting his family first before anything else, loyalty included.

Mason opened his eyes to the fact that loyalty is bandied about by clubs and some players to keep them locked in as the Bulldogs have done at a cheap price for 5 years. He may have been injured a lot but the kid is 22 years old which by my calculations is pretty dam young for a superstar of the game - his body was not fully developed when he arrived in dominating fashion and you can see that in his physique today.

He will only become a better player as he matures and you’re right, the Doggies bosses aren’t fools - its not just his on-field exploits that make the club money - the thousands of Doggies SBW replica jerseys, fan days, endorsements etc will give the club the financial success it needs when the team aren’t doing so well ala a certain Mr Beckham playing for LA Galaxy - check their bank balance now since they signed him.

It’s a professional marketplace now - sportspeople are free to choose their career paths just as you or I could one day decide to become a lawyer or pilot or whatever we feel will put food on the table!

Loyalty you say? Not in our lifetimes.
