Australian Test keeper in waiting Brad Haddin has expressed concern that the incredible standards set by Adam Gilchrist will be impossible to live up to.
Haddin has been selected in the Australian Twenty20 and ODI squad’s as a specialist batsman, with Gilchrist to enjoy a national farewell tour. Careful not to assume the Test role will be his, at least publicly, Haddin asked for the new gloveman to be given breathing space.
“It’s important that whoever takes Gilly’s job for everyone not to compare them. He’ll go down as one of the greats of the game. He’s changed the way wicket keeper’s are seen.
“The way I approach the game won’t change now. I just hope when its time for the selectors to pick a team, my stats stand up.”
Haddin’s form has been solid, with the New South Welshman averaging 51.50 this season in the Pura Cup, with two centuries. Haddin has been a sporadic member of the national ODI squad, playing 26 matches since making his debut in 2001, averaging a more than respectable 31.50.
The Blues keeper paid tribute to Gilchrist, suggesting the 96-Test veteran is responsible for the depth in Australian keeper/batsmen ranks.
“Without him even knowing, he’s lifted the bar in my game. He’s set the bar so high for wicket-keeper/batsmen, if we rested on our laurels, we’d look silly.”
