Hackett 10k Beijing dream over

Grant Hackett’s bid to win gold in the new open water Olympics event has come to an unexpected halt after he failed to qualify.

Hackett needed to finish in the top ten at the Open Water world championships in Spain, however his 15th means the Australian team captain is limited to just swimming in the 1500 metres at Beijing, where he will attempt to go back-back-back.

Ky Hurst finished 5th in Seville to book his spot.
