Gutsy Reds fall short in Wellington

The Wellington Hurricanes have overcome a ten point deficit to beat the Queensland Reds 23-18 at Westpac Trust Stadium.
The Reds seemed destined to notch their second straight win, opening up a 10-nil lead after 14 minutes. A penalty goal was followed a disturbingly simple Van Humphries try. The Reds lock brushed aside several defenders to cross and leave the hosts shellshocked.
The Hurricanes gradually turned around momentum, eventually drawing in the Reds lead midway through the second half, with a long distance try to Ma’a Nonu proving to be the match winner.
Down by ten points, Queensland skipper John Roe scored his third try in two matches in the dying stages to set up a possible grandstand finish. That didn’t happen as the Reds mucked up the crucial restart.
The five-point loss at least ensures the Reds walk away from Wellington with a well earned bonus point.
