GLD 28 CAN 8: Titans jump off the blocks to crush Canberra

A pre game call from Titans coach John Cartright for the Titans to be ruthless has paid dividends, with Gold Coast easing to a 28-8 win over a poor Canberra outfit.

Moments before the match, Cartright told Fox Sports “We can’t be complacent. We’ve struggled to put back to back wins together. We’ve been competitive, but we’re not satisfied with being competitive anymore. We really haven’t done enough to deserve to be complacent.

His players followed those instructions to perfection, outclassing the Raiders from the outset. Matt Petersen scored the first of two tries after just three minutes. Jake Webster and recent addition Josh Lewis added to the bulging scoreline. Mat Rogers impressive form continued, snaking his way past a tepid Canberra defence, before Petersen crossed again on the stroke of half time. The Titans led 28-nil at the break and the game was as good as over.

The intensity wasn’t replicated in the second half, as the contest descended into a series of errors. William Zilliam opened the scoring in the second half, some relief after gifting the Titans a try in the first half, losing the ball in his own in-goal. Ben Jones added another try to the Raiders with ten remaining but the damage had well and truly been done.

The loss drops the Raiders out of the eight, while the Titans enter the top half on for and against.
