Front page Casey laps up winning feeling

Casey Dellacqua is enjoying the new-found celebrity that has come with her magic ride at the Australian Open, although her nan isn’t so sure.

Think Dellaqcua can upset Jankovic at $4.25? Bet with Lasseters now

Dellacqua’s upset win over Amelie Mauresmo - the Australian’s third straight three set thriller – was front page news in today’s local papers. By reaching the round of 16, the unheralded West Australian is one win shy of Alicia Molik’s achievement in 2005.

“I’ve looked at all the papers, and it’s quite a buzz seeing my photo on the front page of the Herald Sun and The Age. It’s quite surreal, but it’s fantastic and it’s exciting,” Dellacqua said.

Dellacqua also discovered winning big matches means a lot of phone calls and text messages from friends. “I didn’t even look at my phone, and then like half an hour after I looked and it was like 54.”

Casey’s greatest supporter, her grandmother, is reserved at the sudden attention heaped on the 22 year old.

“She was like a little bit, ‘Oh, I don’t like this’, because she’s not really used to anything like this before.

“We’re just a family from Perth.”

Dellacqua’s biggest challenge of the week comes tomorrow night, against world number four Jelena Jankovic. While the rankings would suggest this contest is a mismatch, the Serbian has looked the most susceptible of the top seeds, with form and injury both major concerns. Another drawn out battle might be on the cards, something Nan Dellacqua might not be equipped to handle.

“I don’t know if she’d survive. She’d probably have a heart attack, I think.”
