Forgotten Mullen jogs selectors memories

A year ago Jarrod Mullen was the great young hope for the Blues. Now he sits awkwardly in a pecking order that involves the likes of Peter Wallace and Mitchell Pearce, but the Knights halfback showed off his talent to help Newcastle to a 13-12 win over top of the table Gold Coast at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Mullen’s field goal in the 69th minute proved the difference as the Knights held out the fast finishing Titans, however it was his general play that was particularly eye catching. Mullen’s try five minutes before half time – helped by classic passes from Chris Houston and Kurt Gidley – will go down as one of the best of the season.

Gold Coast were in a slumber for the first forty minutes, finally waking up in the second half. Scott Prince was quiet until he scored in the 61st minute, while Mark Minichiello barged over with seven minutes left, ensuring a thrilling finish.

Gidley was dynamic in a performance that will give Blues selectors more headaches. His place in the Origin side is assured, but his hot form will make a bench spot seem almost wasteful.
