Federer survives Sampras scare

Roger Federer has scored his first win since January, however his three set win over long-time retired Pete Sampras in an exhibition in New York will hardly silence his doubters.
Federer beat Sampras 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, in a contest that thrilled the Madison Square Garden crowd.
Sampras led the deciding set 5-2.
The Swiss master has been suffering from mononucleosis virus – commonly known as ‘mono’. The condition is believed to have been a major factor in Federer’s listless exit from the Australian Open. Many experts have predicted his era of dominance ended when he was defeated by rising star Novak Djokovic in the Melbourne Park semi-finals.
Federer showed glimpses of his cat-like movement tonight, albeit with a little rust.
“I felt great. I really need more matches. It’s nice to have been pushed to the brink,” Federer said.
19,000 packed the fabled New York arena, including Federer’s friend Tiger Woods. The world number one won the final set tiebreaker 8-6.
“I thought I had everything under control, then he came back out of nowhere with some great serving,” Federer said.
Federer now moves on to Indian Wells.
