Federer: Night sessions should start earlier

Roger Federer says Venus Williams was within her rights to object a request to move her round three clash with Sania Mirza off Rod Laver Arena, however he wouldn’t had a problem moving if the situation was forced upon him.

“That’s what you get when you want to put women’s and men’s matches at the same time,” Federer said about the situation which he ironically started, when he needed five sets to get past Janko Tipsarevic in the final match of Saturday’s day session.

“Nobody wants to be moved from a centre court match. That is always going to be a problem.

“But if they would come and tell me ‘you’ve got to move’, honestly, I think the players shouldn’t have too much of a say.

“Is it bad to be on Vodafone? I don’t think so. Still a wonderful court.”

Federer is a fan of the night sessions, “I think they’re a bit more he electrifying”, but is calling for the 7.30pm start time to be looked at.

“I think we should maybe start the night sessions maybe an hour earlier.”

The world number one was again tested, despite beating 13 th seeded Czech Tomas Berdych in straight sets. The 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 score belying the closeness of the fourth round clash.

“Thank God he didn’t win that second set because you never know what’s going to happen,” Federer said. “I think he was the better player in that set.”

Federer showed rare frustration during that second set, with the world number one agitated at his struggles to get on top of Berdych, as well as an ongoing battle with Hawk-Eye. Federer might be an all-time legend, however his greatness does not extend to getting his challenges right. Federer spent all three incorrect challenges in the set, which he eventually won 9-7 in a tiebreaker.

“I don’t know if (Hawk-Eye) is accurate. I have no idea.”

Waiting in the quarter finals is American James Blake, who has a wretched record against the Swiss master. While Federer has a dominant record against most, Blake has been particularly woeful against the 12-time slam champion, winning a pitiful one set in seven meetings.

“I know his game sort of suits my game. I’ve had some great matches against him where I always play my very best,” Federer said.
