Essendon wins another thriller

The Bombers are fast becoming the cardiac kids of AFL, scoring its second one point win in successive weeks.

After hanging on for dear life against Sydney, Essendon recovered from a slow start against West Coast, taking the lead for the first time six minutes into the final quarter, with a David Hille behind in time added on proving the difference.

The Bombers were led superbly by James Hird, whose 32 possession contribution was reminiscent of his glory days, that pulled Essendon from the mire of a six goal deficit during the second term.

Scott Lucas kicked five goals, Matthew Lloyd three, as the Bombers superior strike rate in front of goal was decisive.

Essendon move to 7-4 at the half way point of the season, the Eagles drop to 8-3 and a Geelong victory over Adelaide would see West Coast lose top spot. “If we’d played only a couple of per cent better, we would have won the game” said coach John Worsfold.
