Els juggernaut continues
Six-time champion Ernie Els is looking ever the unstoppable force at the World Matchplay championship at Wentworth.
A day after crushing Colin Montgomerie, Els was just as ruthless against Andres Romero, winning 6 and 5, the same margin as Els opening victory.
Next for the three-time major winner is Henrik Stenson in the semi finals.
Stenson had a lengthy Friday. He started by completing his opening round clash with Woody Austin, winning 1 up. The Swede backed that up with a 7 and 6 drubbing of Dane Anders Hansen.
Els is in line for a busy weekend. He is scheduled to travel to Paris on Sunday evening to watch the Springboks do battle with Argentina in the Rugby World Cup semi finals.
“I will see how everything goes this weekend. They have a nine o’clock start in France on Sunday and they have an airport there, close to the stadium. So everything is kind of organised to go,” Els said.
The other semi final will see US Open Champion Angel Cabrera play American Hunter Mahan. Mahan is enjoying a golden run, following up his Presidents Cup success and opening round win with a 6 and 4 crushing of Denmark’s Soren Hansen.
Cabrera was in top form against England’s Paul Casey. The Argentine was one up at the half way point, before stepping it up in the second round.
“I had a great day and holed crucial putts at the crucial moments. I didn’t give him many chances, but he is a world class player, so I knew I had to keep focused all the time, because he could come back at me,” Cabrera said.
