Els and Cabrera kick start rivalry
South Africa and Argentina don’t have a particularly rich history as sporting enemies, however that rivalry will get a double shot on Sunday.
On the eve of the Rugby World Cup semi final between the Springboks and the Pumas, South Africa’s Ernie Els will take on Argentina’s Angel Cabrera in the final of the World Matchplay at Wentworth.
Six-time matchplay champion Els fought back from 1 down after 18 holes against Swede Henrik Stenson to win 3 and 2.
Cabrera was unstoppable for most of his semi final against American Hunter Mahan, opening a 6up lead. However Mahan came storming back to go down 2 and 1.
Els and Cabrera are close friends.
“I have a really good relationship with Ernie. We played together as partners in the Presidents Cup and I have played many times with him. He’s a great gentleman and a great player, and a good friend. I look forward to our final. I will have to play my best to win,” Cabrera said.
The South African has spoken openly abut his desire to attend the rugby semi final in Paris, however his final appointment will make it a tight squeeze, especially if the 36 hole decider goes to distance, let alone beyond.
“It would be great to go. If we have a lot of time, maybe I will. We’ve talked with the pilots and they said we could leave at 7.30pm, but it’s still quite a way away,” he revealed,” Els said.
