El Segundo wins Cox Plate
A devastating burst in the final 200 metres has seen El Segundo win the $3 million dollar W.S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Last years runner up was given a perfect run by jockey Luke Nolen, overtaking a brave Wonderful World in the final 100 metres. The Bart Cummings roughie held on for second, pipping the highly fancied Haradasun, which finished third.
Favourite Miss Finland failed in its historic bid for a Golden Slipper-Cox Plate double, crossing the line fourth in a race which did not suit the star mare. Jockey Craig Williams piloted Miss Finland to an early lead out of barrier 1, before Devil Moon and Haradasun quickly challenged, with the pair slowing down the tempo, while Miss Finland was parked in an awkward position.
David Hayes will now prepare her for the Melbourne Cup.
The victory is the stellar moment in the training career of Colin Little.
“Big thing for us. This is not the Hayes camp or the Freedman camp. Its a smallish stable. A big thrill,” Little told Channel Nine.
“We didn’t think it was any disgrace to run second (in last years Cox Plate). I think an hour after the race we were thinking ‘that’s not good enough and we have some unfinished business’.”
