Dogs release Sherwin

The Bulldogs have lost their second senior player in as many days, with the club granting Brent Sherwin a release to join the English Super League.

The day after Willie Mason was allowed to negotiate with other clubs, the exit of Sherwin from the final year of his deal will significantly boost the Bulldogs coffers for an all-out assault on the player market.

Sherwin will join Castleford.

The Bulldogs halfback signed a five-year deal in the midst of the salary cap crisis. The contract was heavily back-ended, to allow the club to juggle their playing list at the time of the drama, however his form has been wayward in recent years.

“Shifty came to us last week with details of the overture from Castleford.  Although it’s not standard practice for us to release players early from their contracts, this opportunity was in his best interests and we would not want to stand in his way,” said coach Steve Folkes.

Ben Roberts, who has played halfback for the Bulldogs and New Zealand, will be favoured to take the role at the beginning of the 2008 season.

Sherwin played 191 first grade games for the Bulldogs, which included the premiership win in 2004. The Canterbury junior also represented City Origin in 2002, 2003 and 2005.
