Novak Djokovic has struck the first blow in his Australian Open semi-final against world number one Roger Federer, winning the opening set 7-5.Like a championship bout, the pair traded jabs in the early stages, feeling each other out. Federer stepped up his intensity in the seventh game, forcing errors out of the Serbian to break serve.
The Swiss master staved off a break point in the following game, before handing back his advantage when serving for the set in the tenth game. A dumped backhand into the net finishing a poor game by Federer.
The sudden drop in quality continued, as Federer sprayed two unforced errors to lose his fourth consecutive game, handing the set to Djokovic on a platter.
Federer is aiming for his 11th consecutive grand slam final. His current run of 10 is already an-all time record.
The winner will meet unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday night’s decider.
