Novak Djokovic doesn’t believe his superior experience over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be a factor in Sunday’s Australian Open final.
“With the way he played I don’t think so,” Djokovic said shortly after his most important win, a three set shutdown of world number one Roger Federer. “It’s very dangerous to play against somebody who is first time in a Grand Slam final who has nothing to lose.”
“I have more experience in these important matches, and I have been already in a grand slam final. But it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be crucial at that stage.
“I’ve seen many of his matches. I think (like) everybody, I was impressed with the way he plays.
“It’s going to be interesting a very match to see, young players playing against each other.”
While Tsonga has been happily travelling the magic carpet ride over the past fortnight, Djokovic continues his meteoric rise on the tennis scene. This time last year he was barely known, now he’s sitting on a streak that has seen him make the semi-finals of the last four slams.
“As a 20-year-old you get to the finals of a Grand Slam as a favourite, which is a little bit strange for me.”
Djokovic admits the extra day’s rest for Tsonga will be an advantage, but the Serbian still feels fresh.
“The more time off you have I think is better for everybody, but I don’t feel too tired and exhausted. You know, I won all my matches in straight sets.
“I can have a day and a half of rest and preparation, and I’m sure we both (will) be very fresh for the match.”
