Disappointed Sheedy has ‘four or five options’
Outgoing Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy has spoken about missing out on the Melbourne head coach role, which was today filled by Port Adelaide assistant coach Dean Bailey.
Sheedy appeared slightly downcast in his press conference at Subiaco Oval, a day before his Bombers farewell against West Coast.
“All I did was say (to Melbourne) ‘If you need an experience, older coach, no problems with that, I might be able to add some value around the club’,” Sheedy said.
Sheedy said he was happy for Bailey, who played under Sheedy between 1986 and 1991, as well as being Bombers development officer in Essendon’s 2000 premiership season.
“It gets another Bomber up there in the coaching market.
“You’ve got Damien Hardwick and Gary O’Donnell, when they get their opportunity, maybe, that’ll means we’ll half a dozen out there, which is fantastic for the mighty Essendon footy club”
It now appears certain Sheedy won’t have a team to coach next season, with tomorrow potentially shaping as his final match with an AFL club. The 27 year Essendon coach says he has ‘four or five options’.
“One of those options is to have a year off. Sit in the crowd, with you guys. See what you’re saying. See whether you know the game or not. And if you don’t, we’ll have to re-educate you.”
