Demons cripple Bulldogs season

AFL round 19

There weren’t all that many fans at Telstra Dome for this Melbourne home game. A shame really, given the Demons gave its best indication that the future might not be so bleak.

The Bulldogs had scraped part the Demons by a solitary goal in Round 6, however this time they weren’t in the contest from the second term onwards. Ben Holland kicked four goals, Aaron Davey and Russell Robertson three each, while the maligned Byron Pickett chipped in with two. Eleven goals in the middle two quarters provided the catalyst for the heavy win, in Jeff Whites 250th game.

The Bulldogs lost Brad Johnson before the match because of a hamstring injury, while Chris Grant left the game midway through the first term with a knee problem. Shaun Higgins and Robert Murphy provided lone hands, with five and three goals respectively.

The loss is a disaster for the Bulldogs finals hopes. Winless in the last month, the Bulldogs missed a golden opportunity to slide back into the eight. They are fortunate that the Lions and St.Kilda also lost today, keeping the Bulldogs in equal eighth, however their deplorable percentage of 91 keeps them tenth.
