Former Socceroos captain Craig Moore confirmed his international retirement after the Australia’s impressive 3-0 win over Qatar to kick off the path to the 2010 World Cup.
Moore has voiced his likely plans to retire a few weeks ago, citing the structure of the A-League as his biggest obstacle to playing in South Africa. Moore determined the relatively short seasons in the local competition make it impossible to be match-fit for a World Cup.
“That will be the last time,” Moore told Fox Sports. “A great way to finish it off. A job well done.”
“It’s always a sad time when you’re finishing up. But I’d rather go out on my terms.”
Moore collected 40 national caps. He labels his penalty in the 2006 World Cup against Croatia as his international highlight. The goal helped the Socceroos to a 2-2 draw, ensuring a spot in the tournament’s final 16.
“I think Pim knows what I’m like,” Moore said when asked if the new coach tried to talk him out of retiring.
“He’s pretty sure he knew my views on the situation.”
