Ben Cousins has one definite plan set for the future: An exhibition boxing bout on February 27 as part of an Anthony Mundine fight night.
As for Cousins’ football plans?
“I’m not sure.”
With speculation rife that Cousins would turn out for a WAFL or VFL side in 2008 – East Fremantle being his most likely option – the fallen Eagles star was non-committal at today’s Redfern press conference, the first time Cousins has answered questions in a public forum since his drug addiction surfaced last year.
“Probably not competitively, but I’m not sure.
“I’m training a lot, keeping myself in very good nick. I’m not sure how I’ll feel until probably the games start. But I’d like to think at some point I’d at least train with a WAFL or VFL side, just to see how the body is ticking over, if I thought that’s what I wanted to do next year.”
If he thinks that’s what he wants to do?
Cousins was a picture of tanned fitness in the darkened, steamy gym. He fitted in quite comfortably alongside the boxing-fit Mundine and Sonny-Bill Williams, the Bulldogs league player who has endured the rigours of a pre season. Cousins could probably still out-run them both. Former Olympian Nova Peris was there too, tearing up when discussing Cousins plight.
“Today I hope you fellas ask Ben ‘how are you?’. It’s courageous for him to come forward and talk about it,” Peris said.
Cousins will take on an as yet unknown opponent in a boxing exhibition, as part of Mundine’s world title defence against Nader Hamden at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
