Ben Cousins: I am an addict and I am sorry

A remorseful Ben Cousins has apologised for his behaviour as he faces the prospect of a 12 month suspension, handed down by the AFL commission.

Cousins fronted a media conference with AFL commissioner Mike Fitzpatrick after the marathon hearing, which went for over four hours.

“Firstly, I’d like to address the fact I’m overcoming (a) drug addiction, which is an ongoing process,” Cousins told the packed media conference. It’s the first time Cousins has publically acknowledged an ‘addiction’.

“I am bitterly disappointed that I cannot continue to play football, but that’s not to say I have not given up hope of doing so in the future,”  Cousins said.

“I would like to apologise to the AFL, it’s players amd supporters for the embarrassment my conduct has brought to the game.”

Despite reports of a five-day drug bender in Los Angeles a fortnight ago, Cousins says his health is improving.

“Contrary to media reports, I am a lot further down the track in my rehabilitation than has been reported.”
