Cousins in clear

WA Police have dropped the second and final charge that was hanging over Ben Cousins since his arrest on October 16.

Cousins was charged with carrying a prohibited drug in his vehicle and refusing a driver assessment. The first charge was dropped weeks ago, however the police have acted legal advice on the second charge, which suggested Cousins should have been ‘assessed’ by the officer who pulled him over in the suburb of Northbridge, instead of at police headquarters.

“We have done what we think is in the best interests of justice, the best interests of Mr Cousins and the best interests of WA police to notify Mr Cousins through his lawyer and the court that we propose to discontinue this charge,” assistant Police Commissioner John McRoberts said.

“It demonstrates that our internal governance is very sound because we are not allowing this matter to go on one day longer than it ought to.”

The original charge, carrying a prohibited drug, was dropped when it was discovered possession of Diazepam in tablet form was not illegal.

Cousins is not out of the woods with the AFL, who have demanded he face the commission later this month.
