Former West Coast Eagles veteran Chris Mainwaring has died suddenly at the age of 41.

Mainwaring, who played 201 AFL matches for the Eagles, including premierships in 1992 and 1994, collapsed this morning and was rushed to hospital, before being pronounced dead.

Police released a statement this morning.

“Police and St.Johns ambulance attended a residence in Cottesloe to a complaint regarding a man yelling in the street at 11.25 pm. The man was calm upon their arrival and refused assistance from St.Johns ambulance.

“He was placed in the care of a neighbour and returned to his home without incident.

“St.Johns ambulance was called again at around 12:30am to this address, and found the man unconscious.

“He was pronounced dead shortly after.”

A drug overdose had been suspected and it has since been confirmed that Western Australia police are investigating whether illicit substances were involved in Mainwaring’s death. Toxicology tests are being conducted, with a post-mortem to be completed this week.

How can you suspect a drug overdose when nobody knows the full facts yet?

Cmon Val.. Its sad and all but do the maths.. You dont think the yelling and screaming an hour beforehand had anything to do with drugs either i guess? The eagles need to have a serious look at their culture because its clearly in the gutter at the moment. It just proves they’re not invincible after all.. hopefully something like this makes them relaise! RIP Mainy!

Keep culture out of this. These are human beings, people dealing with their lives. Do you have the credentials to pass your judgement. Who ever said they are invincible. What makes who realize? Oh…realise is the way its spelt.

Yeah john they are human beings.. human beings that are defended for being junkies or any other thing they do wrong.. especially by people like you! If Mainwaring or Cousins were from any other club eagles supporters would be all over them.. look how theyre already talking about Judd!? eg.. Isnt running from a booze bus against the law.. isnt taking meth, ecstasy or cannabis against the law.. it certainly is for the likes of me & you John but clearly not those boys.. hence the invincible tag!!

Hi

Lets not pretend we never knew that Chris has been taking drugs for many years and he is partly to blame for the road Ben Cousins took.

These guys are supposed to be examples to the kids I can’t see how we are all blinded by there bad behaviour

State the proof of your comment and there should be spelt their. So, sorry ,I was never privvy to Chris taking drugs ( were you ?) and if you have not seen it with your own eyes then clam up and have some respect for Chris/s family, friends and anyone that has met him and touched by his personality.

Sonny that is disgusting. It is all fine and wonderful to hide behind the internet and speak ill of the dead. Before you shoot you mouth off put your brain into gear. What proof do you have … back up you accusations with facts.

Chris is the father of a 6 and 8 year old. You should hang you head in shame!

Val, you are correct in stating the facts are not yet known, however sources close to the scene had indicated that substances may have been involved. Also, if you have read and listened to some of his colleagues and friends today, such as Brad Hardie, they have all voiced their concern at personal issues that had beset Chris in recent times.

Lets hope the toxicology tests being conducted reveal nothing and this tragedy was due to natural causes.

Agreed James. Nothing said now is going to change what has happened - so it should be a courtesy at least to the family for people to hold their tongues for the 72 hrs it will probably take for more info from the coroner/police to be fed to the public.

irrespective of how the man died the fact is he was a great western australian icon and was a person who entered lives on all levels whether you were an avid sports fan or just some one watching channel 7 on the shows he worked on, drugs are everywhere and sadly are a part of our society, remember him for his good times and good deeds and leave his choices where they belong… with him…. RIP Mainy
