Choc there are bigger fish to fry

Mundine v Green I. Do we really need a second helping?News that a rematch between Anthony Mundine and Danny Green is imminent will disappoint many of The Man’s fans.

Been there, done that.

Mundine is a fighter seriously on the way up. His recent destruction of Sam Soliman was evidence that the former league player has found his identity as a boxer and is more comfortable in his own skin than ever. Green is a memory of lesser times. There are world champions to face, titles to win, other countries to conquer. Outside of money, what is there to gain by going back to Green?

OK, the money would be phenomenal. No doubt Subiaco would be close to full, while a carefully constructed PR campaign would guarantee a healthy pay-per-view across the country. If there is a team that knows how to sniff out a buck, it’s the Mundine crew. His anti-the-universe attitude guaranteed fights against the bummest of bums would turn a significant profit. In this country, simply miraculous. Their skill never exemplified better than when Mikkel Kessler agreed to defend his world title on Choc’s soil. When does a world champ ever give away home ground advantage?

Green says he may put a light heavyweight title on the line. Well, firstly Green has to beat Manny Siaca. No easy task. Just ask Choc. Even if Green does win, the bout may not be sanctioned as a world title fight. That’s a lot of ifs. In any case, Green is now a weight division above Mundine. Does Choc really want to beef up for this and then strip down for later battles?

Mundine has had 31 bouts, all but one promoted by his manager Khoder Nasser. It would be hard to imagine the pair are not set for life, and then some. That would appear to make the pursuit of victory more valuable than the pursuit of money. The Man talks about dominating the world and proving to the world what he apparently already knows, that he is one of the greatest athletes of all time. Every man has his price, but does Choc want to pay the price of fulfilling a legacy while he makes an easy earn?
