Bulldogs let Mason talk to clubs

BREAKING NEWS

Bulldogs forward Willie Mason is free to negotiate with NRL clubs, with the Bulldogs board agreeing to let Mason leave the club.

Bulldogs chairman addressed the media with a short statement, refusing to answer questions.

“The board has resolved to give Willie Mason permission to formally negotiate with other clubs both in England and the NRL,” Peponis said.

“Willie Mason will be asked to come before the board, and he will be given the chance to put his case forward (regarding) the breaking of any club rules.

“That opportunity will be afforded to Willie Mason when he returns from Melbourne, sometime next week.

“The club will not comment further until Willie Mason has had reasonable opportunity to address the board.”

The two hour extraordinary board meeting saw almost the entire Bulldogs first grade turned up to participate in the meeting, including the likes of Reni Maitua and Willie Tonga, close friends of Mason. Club captain Andrew Ryan also attended, as did Sonny Bill Williams.

Three players addressed to board, with suggestions they defended Mason, however informed the board they would accept whatever decision was handed down.

The troubles stemmed from two recent incidents. The first was the clubs denial of a request from Mason to participate in a professional boxing bout in early 2008, believed to be against Carlton AFL player Brendan Fevola. The other issue of conjecture was a supposed hefty fine the club was ready to impose after Mason failed to attend a club function on NRL grand final day.

The relationship between Mason and the Bulldogs hit an all time low when Mason’s management issued a press release, stating four Bulldogs were ready to leave the club if Mason was released.

The decision by the Bulldogs will ensure a feeding frenzy amongst clubs, with the Roosters heavily favoured to win Mason’s signature. Cronulla was expected to be a key player, especially given the warm relationship between Mason and coach Ricky Stuart, however the club has watered down the prospect of making a bid.
