The ACT Brumbies have recovered from their drubbing at the hands of the all-conquering Crusaders, with a 22-20 victory over the Otago Highlanders at Canberra Stadium.
While the win over the weakest of the Kiwi sides will hardly elevate the Brumbies to contender status, it gives the injury-hit team breathing space. ACT number eight Stephen Hoiles was the obvious player of the match. He scored the home sides only try of the second half, while an vital ankle-tap in defence kept his team’s head above water.
As if the Brumbies casualty list – boasting Stirling Mortlock, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Clyde Rathbone amongst others – wasn’t enough to contend with, captain George Smith left the game early in the second half. Thankfully for the Brumbies, he appears to have sustained nothing more than a corked thigh.
