Fallen West Coast Eagles star Ben Cousins will make his boxing debut on an Anthony Mundine undercard in February.
Cousins’ opponent for the February 27 bout is unknown, with talk of the fight drawing out a jovial response from Cousins.
“That exhibition fight was supposed to be against Sonny-Bill Williams, but I’ve seen how big he is today, so it’s been scrapped. Ha ha,” Cousins said, in his final words of a press conference that was bursting at the seams with journalists, some of which specially flew in from Melbourne, as Cousins answered questions from the media for the first time.
While Cousins has a new, if not temporary, career to look forward to, his desire to continue his football wasn’t so prevalent. Banned from playing AFL in 2008 because of drug related issues, a typically fit Cousins was undecided about playing in a second tier state league this season.
“Probably not competitively, but I’m not sure. I’m training a lot, keeping myself in very good nick.
“I’m sure how I’ll feel until probably he games start. But I’d like to think at some point I’d at least train with a WAFL or VFL side, just to see how the body is ticking over, if I thought that’s what I wanted to do next year.”
That final, breathless, sentence will give the football world plenty of food for thought.
Cousins will be a supporting act on his new friend Anthony Mundine’s fight night, against Nader Hamden at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on February 27.
