Ben Cousins charged with drug possession

Ben Cousins has been charged with possession of drugs and failing to give a blood sample to police.

WA police confirmed the arrest tonight, saying they stopped the four wheel drive Cousins was driving ‘due to the manner of his driving’.

What form of drugs were found in the vehicle have yet to be disclosed, however police have confirmed they are ‘prohibited’.

Cousins was shirtless and smiling as he was taken away by police this morning. Eagles teammate Daniel Chick has also reportedly been arrested, while a young female was also in the vehicle.

Cousins was pulled over on Newcastle Street in Northbridge, before being questioned in his four-wheel drive for almost an hour.

Reports indicate a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted on the scene.

Cousins’ father Bryan visited Ben in East Perth lock up, along with former girlfriend Samantha Druce, who brought Ben a t-shirt.

Cousins has endured a tumultuous year, which includes spending time at a drugs rehabilitation clinic in the United States, while his close friend Chris Mainwaring died last month, with drugs allegedly involved.

The career of Cousins has been on tenterhooks since his return to football midway through the season. The former Eagles captain was consigned to a number of conditions, including a zero tolerance policy. The mere arrest could result in his contract with West Coast being torn up.

Cousins will face Perth magistrates court on Thursday.
