Baddeley in the thick of U.S. Open

THE AUSTRALIANS

The driver is not usually a feature of Aaron Baddeley’s arsenal. Putting, yep; Short game, sure, but nothing off the tee.

Not this week.

Baddeley is two shots behind Argentina’s Angel Cabrera at the half way point of the brutal U.S. Open. The next best Australians are Geoff Ogilvy and Stuart Appleby at +6.

The two-time champion on the PGA tour has never contended in a major, “I played nice. Right now I’m in a great position for the weekend”

Baddeley was also quite effusive about the improvements he has made since first playing a major in 2000. “My game was nowhere near close to this level. My driving is so much better now. My character and who I am as a person is so much stronger because of those (tough) times, because I have the patience and the tools to contend in a U.S. Open”.

Six of the Twelve Australians made the cut. Adam Scott was the most notable Aussie to miss the weekend, following a horrendous 82. Steve Elkington’s nightmare is over, following a first round 84 with a 79, finishing at 23 over. Six players amazingly finished with a higher score.
