Avram does what Jose could not
Chelsea will play in its first ever Champions League/European Cup final and its ironic that the much-maligned Avram Grant has led the Blues to the promised land.
Chelsea beat Liverpool 3-2 in an extra time thriller in the second semi-final leg at Stamford Bridge, setting up a Moscow decider against Manchester United. Jose Mourinho, Grant’s predecessor, won six trophies during his stint, however he could never guided Chelsea to a European decider.
“We have created history and I am very proud we did it my way,” Grant said. “But I don’t like to say ‘I’ because Roman (Abramovich), he created this club, my staff are excellent, my assistants, everybody.”
It didn’t take long for a reporter to bring up the fact Grant has achieved something Mourinho couldn’t.
“There’s only one special one,” Grant quipped. “But this was special against Liverpool. They are a fantastic team and Rafa (Rafael Benitez) played tactically. You need to be clever against him but we did it.”
Didier Drogba’s double will doubtless be the headline act of a pulsating tie, however Frank Lampard’s penalty just days after the passing of his mother will also go down in Chelsea legend.
“Frank played very well and in my opinion was one of our key players today. It is not an easy thing, he is under. You know what he is under,” Grant said.
“He gave everything to the team.”
