Australia 1/86 at lunch

The second test in Hobart is following a similar pattern to the first test, with Australia’s batsmen in a strong position after the first session.

Australia are 1 for 86 at lunch on the opening day, with Phil Jaques on 48 and Ricky Ponting 16. Matt Hayden is the batsman out, caught behind off Dilhara Fernando for 17.

Jaques and Hayden were tested early by Sri Lanka’s opening attack of Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof, however the breakthrough never came. Hayden was dropped on 12, by captain Mahela Jayawardene in the slips off Maharoof, but Hayden’s impatience cost him a short time later when he swung wildly at Fernando, catching the edge.

Jaques is on track for back-to-back hundreds after his 100 in Brisbane, while Ponting has been cautious in front of his home crowd.

Murali has bowled two overs, costing eight runs. He is expected to feature heavily through the rest of the day.

Ricky Ponting won the toss.
