When Sir Alex Ferguson gives a succinct synopsis of a match, usually he’s not happy. When he doesn’t speak to the media at all? He’s downright angry.
Ferguson had every reason to be in a filthy mood after Manchester United’s 2-1 Old Trafford loss to derby rivals Manchester City. His side was thoroughly outplayed and had no right to claim anything from the day.
United’s loss hands League leaders Arsenal a golden gift. The Gunners are two points clear and have a match in hand.
Both City goals came in the first half. Darius Vassell scored on 24 minutes, with Benjani grabbing a goal on debut on 45 minutes. Martin Petrov had a significant role in both. Michael Carrack halved the deficit near the finish, but there was simply not enough time for what would have been an undeserved equaliser.
Ferguson’s assistant Carlos Queiroz spoke in the absence of the main man. “We did not play in the right way and we had no tempo and no inspiration. We were trying to win the game too early They were always trying to catch us on the counter-attack, it concerned our defenders and that is what cost us the game.”
Sven Goran Ericsson’s men reclaim seventh spot, while more importantly winching themselves within three points of fourth placed Everton. “I am extremely proud of our team. If you go to Old Trafford and win you deserve it. Everyone was wonderful.”
The day marked the 50th anniversary of the Munich disaster, with United and City fans observing the one minute silence flawlessly. “I am also very proud of our fans, they were perfect before the game and fantastic right through the 90 minutes,” Ericsson said.
