American men: Roddick and Young get walkovers

Victory for a couple of the locals in the men’s singles at the US Open, who were aided by the ailments of their opponents.

5 seed Andy Roddick lost the first set against Jose Acasuso 6-4 on Arthur Ashe Stadium and the American seemed rattled. However, Acasuso had a problem with his left knee, getting it strapped, before wilting in the second and third sets. He retired when it was obvious he could no longer challenge Roddick.

“It’s unfortunate that Jose hurt his knee. I thought he played a very good first set. It’s not the way you want to get through but at the beginning of the day all you want to do is get through to the third round,” Roddick said.

The dream run of 18 year old Donald Young continues, albeit with a little help.

Young’s second round opponent, 13 seed Richard Gasquet, withdrew before the match because of a fever and o sore throat.

“With my illness, I’m sure I can’t win this match,” Gasquet said.
