Dragons relentless in Canberra crushing

It was Dragons of old at WIN Stadium, with St.George Illawarra hammering a hapless Canberra.

The Raiders opened the scoring when Todd Carney scooted to the line in the fifth minute. That try was cancelled out by Dan Hunt’s try three minutes later, before the game settled down. No one would have expected what was to follow.

The Dragons were full of razzle dazzle as they racked up 52 points in the final 59 minutes. Jamie Soward’s renaissance hit its peak, with the former Roosters halfback finishing with a personal tally of 22 points.

Canberra were not without a chance in the second half, when they reduced the gap to 28-16. That hope was snuffed out quickly, as St.George Illawarra went on an attacking rampage, scoring more points in the final 23 minutes than they had in any match this season.

The Dragons have overtaken Canberra on the NRL ladder, keeping their flickering finals hopes alive.

“Embarrassing. Embarrassing for the fans who came down to watch us”, said Canberra coach Neil Henry.

“They were very hot today. We couldn’t stop their offloads. They made the most of our poor defence”.
