World Cup 15: Shaun Tait + Mitchell Johnson = No Stuart Clark.
BREAKING NEWS: 5pm Tues 13/2
Shaun Tait will no doubt be billed as the contentious selection of the Australian 15 man world cup squad. Seems the obvious standout, given a career which has spanned two one day internationals would struggle to match up with the pedigree of Stuart Clark. Clark certainly has a case, but perhaps it’s Mitchell Johnson who should be under the spotlight. It would seem incongruous to believe Australia would play two left armer’s in its best line up. Given Nathan Bracken has solidified his position as Lee’s new ball partner, Johnson would have to be mightily impressive against the minnow teams to get a look in against the threats. Tait is different. His worth will be determined wholly on his own performance. He gives the team something no one else can. Tait is worth the risk.
Shane Watson may consider himself lucky. His comeback has exposed flaws, most notably robotic batting and unthreatening bowling. Cameron White has missed his chance. A big hitter but small turner of the ball, White had his papers marked when Andrew Symonds retired hurt.
Brad Haddin’s place was obviously locked in before Cricket Australia gave Adam Gilchrist compassionate leave. They can be a kind bunch at CA, but they’re not silly. There’s no way they’d alter their squad so Gilly could miss the Scotland and Holland matches. CA may have also had an ulterior motive. Gilchrist’s late arrival will also give Haddin a crack at opening. Matthew Hayden will need to be careful.
As for Symonds, his place was never in doubt. Performances since his injury have made it clear he is missed in every facet, with the prospect of the burly Queenslander for as little as one match far more tantalising than whatever a 15th squad member could have delivered throughout.
