Aussie cricketers running out of time for Victory

The same day the Australian cricketers lost their 4th straight one-dayer as well as their top ranking, the Melbourne Victory fulfilled the promise of a dominant season, romping home with A-League championship. Yeah, what’s the common link? Excellent question.
Sport is littered with teams who monstered a season, only to inexplicably splutter to a wretched conclusion. [...]

Enough already of hit and giggle cricket

DAILY SERVE: Sun 18/2

Just about every year there seems to be a day reserved for some sort of testimonial one day match. A collection of former players, athletes from other sports and celebrities getting together for a hit and giggle match. It started with the Allan Border match in 1993 and was a smash. A [...]

Cricket rankings make no sense

DAILY SERVE: Fri 16/2
….and to top off this horror fortnight, if Australia wasn’t to win the Chappell/Hadlee series, it would lose its number one ranking. Not only would they lose their top ranking, they’d lose it to….. South Africa.
What? Have I been in a two year coma, in which the Proteas have suddenly become [...]

Australian cricket not arrogant, but possibly stupid.

DAILY SERVE: Thu 15/2
New Zealanders like to criticize Australia and its people. It’s what they do. News of Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist’s no show at the Chappell Hadlee series fuelled the latest fire. Over there they’re calling it arrogant. A popular condemnation. Martin Crowe tossed up a line about ‘Australia dropping the world cup’, a [...]

Let John Kosmina coach

DAILY SERVE: Weds 14/2
John Kosmina seems like the type of man that could pop a blood vessel if the gherkin was left out of his Big Mac. Heaven knows how he’ll react if he’s not allowed to coach Adelaide United in the A-League Grand Final.
Kosi will today attempt to explain why he should not be [...]

The impossible Challenge for the Brisbane Broncos

Quick question for you rugby league fans: Who won last year’s world club challenge? The answer is the Bradford Bulls, who beat the Wests Tigers 30 to 10. Remember? What about the year before? Leeds over the Bulldogs. Struggling? The point is, these games are similar to one day cricket. Nice contests but completely forgettable. [...]

World Cup 15: Shaun Tait + Mitchell Johnson = No Stuart Clark.

BREAKING NEWS: 5pm Tues 13/2
Shaun Tait will no doubt be billed as the contentious selection of the Australian 15 man world cup squad. Seems the obvious standout, given a career which has spanned two one day internationals would struggle to match up with the pedigree of Stuart Clark. Clark certainly has a case, but perhaps [...]

Let Peter Brock rest in peace

DAILY SERVE: Tues 13/2
Please tell me this is a joke. Plans to restore and exhibit the car which claimed the life of Peter Brock are not only repulsive, they are also reflective of a society which can find monetary value in a sandwich half-eaten by a pop star.
What possible joy could be derived of [...]

Craig Gower messes up again. Now where’s the NRL?

DAILY SERVE: Mon 12/2
It doesn’t even make the back page anymore. We’ve become so nonchalant to Craig Gower’s late night shenanigans, these days newspaper reports of his activities sit behind the Aussie cricket team, the A-League and women’s golf. Now, that is blasé.
Gower is apparently about to lose the captaincy at Penrith, after a [...]
