Knights end Tigers season

Newcastle Knights

> Cowboys fall over line against Bulldogs

In what is almost an anti-climax to the end of the regular season, The NRL top eight has already been set, after the Wests Tigers crumbled in the last six minutes against Newcastle, to lose 26-24 at Telstra Stadium.

The result means South Sydney will play finals football for the first time in 18 years, while Penrith are sitting with the wooden spoon, unless they beat the Warriors tomorrow night.

The Tigers, searching for a large victory to put the teams above them under pressure, led 24-12 with six minutes remaining. The Knights scored converted tries in the 74th and 79th minutes to Kurt Gidley and Cooper Vuna to leave the scores tied at 24-24.

With the game set for extra time, Cory Patterson produced a timely one on one strip. Newcastle then received a penalty in the final minute after Danny Buderus darted from dummy half, catching the Tigers offside, with Kurt Gidley slotting the goal from just outside the 30m line, to end the Tigers season and rid the Knights of last place, despite their wretched season.

The result also ensures Brisbane will make their sixteenth consecutive finals series.
